Course Description
During pregnancy, the mother can experience “morning sickness” and “pregnancy gingivitis”. Often patients will confide in the dentist and dental staff that they are trying to get pregnant. The dentist can be proactive in taking care of caries, extractions, and periodontal disease before. Active periodontal disease during pregnancy can result in low birth weight babies, pre-eclampsia, and pre-term delivery all which can effect the fetus.
Pregnant patients may also experience craving for sweets and require dietary counseling. Dental treatment during pregnancy is a controversial topic as well as what anesthetics, analgesics, and antibiotics can be prescribed that will be discussed.
