Pharmacology and Internal Medicine: Mandatory topic for license renewal in many states

Course Objectives: Upon Completion of this program the participant will be able to:
- Identify common drug classes used in dentistry, such as analgesics, antibiotics, local anesthetics, and anti-inflammatory agents.
- Recognize potential drug interactions with medications patients may be taking (e.g., antihypertensives, anticoagulants, diabetes medications).
- Understand indications and contraindications for antibiotic use in dental care.
- Implement strategies to avoid over prescription and unnecessary use of antibiotics to combat antibiotic resistance.
- Describe the mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, and appropriate dosing of local anesthetics.
- Recognize potential adverse reactions to local anesthetics and how to manage them.
- Review sedative medications used in dental settings and their pharmacological properties.
- Understand the pharmacological considerations when treating pediatric, geriatric, and medically compromised patients.
- Modify drug dosages and choices based on the patient’s medical history, renal and liver function, and concurrent medications.
Taking a complete medical history and routinely updating that medical history on every visit gives the dentist valuable information that could influence dental treatment and the outcomes our dental treatment, This program will review the most common medications that dental patients are taking and their side effects and any effect on our dental treatment. Bisphosphonates and jaw osteonecrosis, Antibiotics- when is premedication necessary and when to use post treatment, Calcium Channel blockers and gingival hyperplasia, Blood thinners, Diabetics, and other little known facts.
- You will need a smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer to view it. If using a smartphone or tablet, it is best to have the app for the program on your device (i.e. Zoom).
- To verify your continued attendance during the class, you will need a microphone
- you will need a Webcam, the instrutor must be able to see you for the duration of the program.
- Instructors or school personnel will take attendance periodically throughout the class.
- Instructors may call on participants.
- To verify attendance, a code word may be given sometime during the class.
- You will be required to complete and return an evaluation after the course has ended. The evaluation may ask what code word was given.
- You may not receive your Certificate of Completion if we cannot verify your attendance.
Certificates of Completion are emailed to students approximately 5 business days after the course.
This program is for the full dental staff – no prior skills are needed to attend.
The teaching method will be in a lecture format with a Q & A period.
