Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
-
Explain the importance of accurate diagnosis in managing endodontic and periodontal conditions while prioritizing tooth preservation.
-
Differentiate between endodontic and periodontal sources of dental pathology using clinical signs, symptoms, and radiographic findings.
-
Compare the diagnostic value and limitations of periapical radiographs and CBCT in evaluating endo–perio conditions.
-
Assess periapical radiolucencies in asymptomatic patients and determine their clinical significance.
-
Incorporate periodontal evaluation of the affected tooth and adjacent teeth into comprehensive diagnostic and treatment planning.
-
Identify radiographic and clinical features of internal versus external root resorption and discuss their impact on prognosis.
-
Apply systematic diagnostic strategies to support informed treatment decisions and improve patient outcomes.

Course Description
Preserving the natural dentition remains a primary goal for both patients and dental providers. However, accurately identifying the source of dental pain—or determining the clinical significance of radiographic findings in asymptomatic patients—can be challenging. This course provides an in-depth review of diagnostic strategies used to differentiate endodontic and periodontal conditions, with a focus on clinical decision-making that supports tooth preservation whenever possible.
Participants will explore the diagnostic value of both traditional periapical radiography and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), including appropriate indications and limitations of each modality. Special attention will be given to cases involving periapical radiolucencies in the absence of patient-reported pain, emphasizing how clinical findings, radiographic interpretation, and periodontal assessment influence diagnosis and treatment planning.
The course will also address the critical role of periodontal health—not only of the tooth in question but of adjacent teeth—in determining prognosis and treatment outcomes. Additionally, internal and external root resorption will be reviewed, with discussion on radiographic appearance, etiology, and implications for treatment. Through clinical examples and evidence-based discussion, participants will gain greater confidence in making accurate diagnoses and selecting appropriate treatment pathways.
