Learning Objectives:

An understanding of conditions that affect the orofacial region that are commonly misdiagnosed as a toothache.

This presentation is aimed at general dentists as well as specialists and staff.

Course Description:

  • Anatomy of the TMJ
  • Review of the masticatory muscles
  • Differential Diagnosis: Muscle vs. Joint
  • Diagnostic tests for each condition and management.
  • Be able to diagnose the various presentations of TMD’s and make referrals when indicated.

Instructor:  Dr. Sowmya Ananthan earned her DMD and MSD degrees at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Now the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine). She teaches there in the Division of Orofacial Pain. Dr. Ananthan is board certified by the American Board of Orofacial Pain. Her research interests include trigeminal neuropathic pain, and the interaction between sleep disorders and pain.
