Course Description:

This program will review key clinical issues related to antibiotic use, prescription medications and other substances that may impact on dental treatment as well as the agents we use routinely during the provision of oral health care. The presentation will highlight the most current concepts and recommendations regarding antibiotic prophylaxis, vasoconstrictors, potential drug interactions and managing cannabis-using patients.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the risks / benefits of, and current recommendations regarding antibiotic prophylaxis for dental/dental hygiene procedures;
  2. Describe a rational approach to the use of vasoconstrictors;
  3. List medications taken by patients that may impact on dental treatment, including recently introduced drugs;
  4. Identify and appropriately manage patients who use substances and seek oral health care.

 

Instructor:     Dr. Hillel Ephros (Hilly) is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and St. George’s University School of Medicine. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and served as an Examiner for that Board from 2003-9. He chairs the Department of Dentistry at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson, NJ and directs the residency program in oral & maxillofacial surgery sponsored by St. Joseph’s in affiliation with New York Medical College where he is a member of the faculty. Dr. Ephros also has adjunct faculty appointments at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine and Rutgers. He has published in the scientific literature, authored textbook chapters and received awards for teaching including the Archbishop John J. Meyers Outstanding Educator Award in 2003 at Seton Hall University. Dr. Ephros serves as a member of the oral cancer workgroup of the New Jersey task force on the prevention and control of cancer and is the current Chairman of the Oral Cancer Consortium.

  5.  To verify attendance, a code word may be given sometime during the class.
  6. You will be required to complete and return an evaluation after the course has ended. The evaluation may ask what code word was given.
  7.  You may not receive your Certificate of Completion if we cannot verify your attendance.
