Course Description:

Teeth Whitening treatments are one of the most commonly asked for cosmetic procedures. Patients are not only asking for it, but making their own decisions to treat themselves. Therefore, it is important for each member of the dental team, and their responsibility to become knowledgeable in all aspects of whitening. This includes understanding the science of whitening and sensitivity, identifying different types of stain, knowing how to educate patients, identifying the right candidates, and implementing the appropriate treatment option.

How Whitening Works

Tooth whitening is done with one of two active ingredients: carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. Some whitening products contain hydrogen peroxide and others contain carbamide peroxide. Both will safely penetrate teeth to oxidize stains, producing whiter, brighter smiles. Carbamide peroxide contains hydrogen peroxide at a ratio of approximately 1:3. So if a product has a concentration of 30% carbamide peroxide, it contains about 10% hydrogen peroxide. Carbamide peroxide breaks down into hydrogen peroxide and urea, which allows for a longer period of active peroxide release. This is why carbamide peroxide whitening agents have a longer wear time than hydrogen peroxide whiteners. Hydrogen peroxide is typically used for shorter wear times—when patients desire convenience and less of a time commitment. Opalescence offers both carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide treatment options, allowing clinicians to customize the treatment that best suits their professional recommendations and the needs of each patient.
