Substance use disorder: Implications for oral health & provision of dental care
This program provides an overview of the epidemiology, pathogenesis, risk factors and systemic complications of opioid and stimulant use disorders and discuss the impact of addiction to these drugs on oral health and provision of dental care. The program also illustrates examples of oral sequela of SUD and provides tips on screening for SUD in dental settings and safe opioid prescribing for dental pain. The role of dental provider in the overall management, prevention of oral and dental complications as well as habit cessation is also emphasized.
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:
· Describe brain reward system and pathogenesis of substance use disorder
· Take relevant history, identify risk factors and recognize oral and systemic signs and symptoms of SUD
· Understand the potential impact of SUD on oral health and provision of dental care
· Assess patient’s medical stability for safe delivery of oral health care
· Understand pain physiology, appropriate dental pain management and safe opioid prescribing
· Increase their confidence and skills in communicating with patients
· Learn about the basics of habit modification and role of dental providers in facilitating recovery
Instructor: Dr. Mahnaz Fatahzadeh
Dr. Mahnaz Fatahzadeh obtained her B.Sc. & DMD degrees as well as her GPR certificate from the Univ. of British Columbia; Canada and practiced general dentistry. She completed her Oral Medicine fellowship & MSD degree at Rutgers School-Dental Medicine. She is a professor of Oral Medicine & an attending at the Univ. Hospital. Dr. Fatahzadeh is a diplomat of American Board of Oral Medicine and serves as director of pre & post-doctoral oral medicine training at the Rutgers School-Dental Medicine.
