Course Objectives: Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to:

*Communicate basic questions and understand simple answers from the Deaf/Hard of Hearing patient

*Learn and use the ASL alphabet

*Understand the differences between English & American Sign Language

*Obtain a better relationship with the Hard of Hearing/Deaf patient allowing for an overall improved patient care experience

Method of Instruction: Lecture, Demonstration and Hands-On Practice

Course Outline:

  1. Introduction to the Deaf/HH Patient
  2. the benefits of learning sign language and increased quality of care that arises
  3. introduction to Deaf Culture
  4. communication skills and working with an interpreter
  5. obtaining a more accurate medical history
  6. Learning American Sign Language
  7. Finger spelling
  8. Grammar
  9. Practice!!! Role Play & Dialogue

Instructor: Kristin Steinmetz is an American Sign Language Interpreter who has worked throughout the communities of New York and New Jersey since 2005. She has worked in various freelance settings including medical, platform, business, educational.  Kristin has held her National RID Certification (NIC) since 2009 and is also listed as a qualified interpreter through the NJ Division of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. In addition, she is the mother of 2 girls , a photographer and the owner/trainer at CrossFit TreeHouse in Kenilworth NJ.
