Description
This course will detail the various dental emergencies and dental “911” situations.
The most common to the lesser known and benign to malignant lesions will be reviewed.
The emphasis is on the differential diagnosis and the treatment or appropriate referral of the emergency or suspicious lesions.

Learning objectives:
- Clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of periodontal emergencies
- Systemic conditions with facial, oral or periodontal manifestations such as hereditary, hematologic, infectious, endocrinopathic, immune-mediated, dermatologic, granulomatous, cardiovascular, pulmonary and metastatic conditions.
- Diagnostic evaluation of patients with oral pathology of systemic origin (diagnosed or subjectively silent systemic condition or medical therapy).
- Orofacial findings associated with medical therapy such as osteonecrosis of the jaw, osteoradionecrosis, mucositis, xerostomia, oral pigmentation, gingival hyperplasia,
- Potential impact of these manifestations on oral care, prevention as well as appropriate management of dental complications
- Follow up and documentation process
Course description
Oral cavity is readily accessible for inspection and a gateway for assessment of general health. In fact, many systemic conditions affecting organs far from head and neck region could manifest in the orofacial region, sometimes prior to their diagnosis. Abnormalities detected in the orofacial region may also represent complications related to medical therapy or raise concern about substance abuse. This program reviews clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of periodontal emergencies and provides illustrative examples oral pathology of systemic origin which could mimic dental/periodontal disease or local oral pathology. Relevant signs, symptoms and diagnostics are reviewed and the potential role of oral health care provider in recognition, referral, follow-up and overall management is emphasized.

Dr. Mahnaz Fatahzadeh obtained her B.Sc. & DMD degrees as well as her GPR certificate from the Univ. of British Columbia; Canada and practiced general dentistry. She completed her Oral Medicine fellowship & MSD degree at Rutgers School-Dental Medicine. She is a professor of Oral Medicine & an attending at the Univ. Hospital. Dr. Fatahzadeh is a diplomat of American Board of Oral Medicine and serves as director of pre & post-doctoral oral medicine training at the Rutgers School-Dental Medicine.
