There is an extremely low reporting rate of child abuse by the dental community and this program is designed to promote awareness.

Course ObjectiveUpon completion of this class the participant will be able to:

  1. Explain the behavioral characteristics of a sexually abused child
  2. Identify the signs of abuse and the physical indicators of abuse
  3. State the different reporting hotlines
  4. Identifying the history of injuries
  5. Explain the difference between accidental injuries from abuse
  6. Explain the difference between abuse and neglect
  7. Describe the responsibilities of the health care provider when dealing with potential abuse
  8. Understand the immunity from Civil or Criminal Liability

Description: This program will discuss preventing abuse and neglect through dental awareness. This program is sponsored by Delta Dental Plan of New Jersey through it’s philanthropic arm, the Delta Dental Endowment Association. Health Care professionals are mandated by state law to report suspected cases of abuse and neglect. Be able to differentiate accidental injuries from abuse. Learn protocols for knowing when to document and report abuse. Physical and behavioral indicators will be discussed.  Clinical cases will be presented.

Teaching method will be lecture format with Q & A period.

Instructor: Dr. Lawrence A Dobrin: is a graduate and also a visiting associate professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ. Dr. Dobrin is a member of the NJ Dental Association, the Union County Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, the NJ Pediatric Dental Association, and he is a fellow of the American College of Dentists. Dr. Dobrin also serves as the Chief  Forensic Dentist for the Office of Chief Medical Examiner of NY. City.   He is also a consultant to the Union County Medical Examiner and the Regional Medical Examiner in   Newark, NJ. Dr. Dobrin’s involvement in academic dentistry affords him the opportunities for the newest techniques in modern dentistry. Dr. Dobrin is a Diplomat of the American Board of Forensic Odontology.
