Learning Objectives:  This program helps participants to:

  • Describe which lesions should be assessed immediately/referred?
  • Distinguish between the indications for a biopsy and different types of biopsy techniques
  • Explain when and how to use adjunct diagnostic procedures to screen red/white lesions
  • Describe how to treat commonly occurring conditions: traumatic ulcers, canker sores, fever blisters, pyogenic granulomas, ANUG, thrush, angular cheilitis, hairy tongue,  symptomatic geographic tongue, etc.
  • Outline the role of the dentist in diagnosing and managing oral manifestations of systemic disease
  • Describe the follow-up regimen and documentation process

Course Description:

In addition to examining the dental and periodontal structures, the oral health practitioner is required to be familiar with the plethora of oral lesions which can present in the oral cavity.  This interactive, case-based presentation will provide practical guidelines for accurate initial assessment of lesions most commonly seen in the dental office and provide the oral health care provider with a level of comfort when he/she must make clinical decisions regarding management.

Oral Pathology- Oral Medicine Case Reviews

Learning Objectives:  This program helps participants to:

  • Accurately categorize oral lesions to narrow down differential diagnosis
  • Apply appropriate descriptive terminology in documenting oral lesions
  • Develop a prioritized list of differential diagnosis consistent with available data
  • Identify pertinent diagnostic procedures: imaging, auscultation, vitality testing, aspiration, blood tests, biopsy, etc.
  • Select appropriate site for biopsy when indicated
  • Recognize salient histological features leading to definitive diagnosis
  • Apply clinical pearls to appropriate management of cases discussed

Course Description:

This interactive program presents a broad spectrum of soft and hard tissue pathologies dental providers may encounter in daily practice. For each case, presenter provides patient’s chief complaint as well as pertinent clinical and radiographic data and invites the audience to participate in discussions regarding clinical categorization, appropriate description, diagnostic evaluation and management of oral abnormalities. Presenter, then, discloses diagnosis and emphasizes clinical pearls regarding the case management.

Instructor:   Dr. Mahnaz Fatahzadeh

Dr. Mahnaz Fatahzadeh obtained her B.Sc. & DMD degrees  as well as her GPR certificate from the Univ. of British Columbia; Canada and practiced general dentistry. She completed her Oral Medicine fellowship & MSD degree at Rutgers School-Dental Medicine. She is a professor of Oral Medicine & an attending at the Univ. Hospital. Dr. Fatahzadeh is a diplomat of American Board of Oral Medicine and serves as director of pre & post-doctoral oral medicine training at the Rutgers School-Dental Medicine.
